"The El Vacío book is a visual wormhole into the world of Gogy Esparza’s photographs. At the project’s core is a series of photographs taken by Gogy on his BlackBerry, a tool well-suited for transient moments. He collaborated with Nikolai Rose to design a book of the images, and create an immersive installation that embodies the El Vacío experience. Rather than displaying the photographs as a linear sequence of images, the book’s design distills the installation’s all-encompassing feeling into a physical object. Images are doubled, layered, cropped, mis-aligned and repeated to create a sense of depth and déjà vu. The concept, spirit and subject matter are autobiographical -- a photographic testimony to Gogy’s life. El Vacío is a space he has been inside of and has documented throughout." Artist's statement
